Colored Pencil Workshop with botanical artist Nina Antze

Drawing Green Leaves and Stems in Colored Pencil
Workshop with botanical artist Nina Antze
Saturday, March 4, 10:00am-3:00pm

Laguna Environmental Center, 900 Sanford Road, Santa Rosa, CA 95401

$85. Pre-registration required: www.lagunafoundation.org

“It is sometimes claimed that the ability to paint and draw leaves well, rather than flowers, is what makes the difference between a good and an excellent botanical artist.” Margaret Stevens, The Art of Botanical Painting.

If you are a nature artist, you know that drawing leaves are the most important objects we draw and yet often the most difficult. Learn to mix and identify “good” greens, draw veins and edges, and make your leaves come to life. Experiment with creating fun browns to create interesting stems and branches. Enjoy a peaceful, meditative day doing pencil work in lovely Heron Hall. All drawing levels are welcome. Suitable for 12 year olds and up (children under 15 years of age must be accompanied by an adult). A supply list will be provided.

Nina Antze is a Sonoma County botanical artist and quiltmaker. She has a degree in Fine Art from San Francisco State and a Certificate in Botanical Illustration from the New York Botanical Gardens. She teaches colored pencil and botanical workshops throughout the Bay Area. Learn more about Nina at her website.

Learn to paint with Alcohol Ink - Beginners Workshop

Alcohol inks offer unparalleled spontaneity and freedom. Their alcohol base creates a clarity, depth, and vibrancy of color not easily achievable with water-based paints. Use them on any non-absorbent surface- ceramic tiles, yupo (a synthetic paper), plastic, glass, metal, gourds, etc. Drop any combination of the ink colors on your surface and watch them come alive! If you are looking to "loosen up," this is the medium for you.

No experience needed. Wear clothes that can get messy, and bring a smock if you have one. Come prepared to have fun, discover your natural creativity, and fall in love with alcohol inks!

Birds of Prey at the Laguna: Birding Walk with Larry Broder

Birds of Prey at the Laguna:
Birding Walk with Larry Broderick
Saturday, March 11, 10:00am-2:00pm
Meet at Laguna Environmental Center, 900 Sanford Road, Santa Rosa, CA 95401
$30.  Pre-registration required: www.lagunafoundation.org
Suitable for all ages and levels of birdwatching from beginners to advanced.

The Laguna de Santa Rosa has long been one of the best spots in the North Bay to see resident, migrant and over-wintering birds of prey and many other bird species. We will walk through Laguna trails looking for Birds of Prey while keying in on diagnostic identification field marks and behavioral traits. On past trips through the wetlands and uplands we have found all the common Birds of Prey in our region, plus some more uncommon ones, such as Prairie Falcon, Merlin, Rough-legged Hawk, Ferruginous Hawk and Bald Eagle. We will also be on the lookout for other interesting birds and wildlife. We’ll meet at Heron Hall and carpool to one or two sites along the Laguna, depending on conditions. If the forecast on Friday night is for moderate to heavy rain Saturday morning, we will notify you and reschedule to the alternate rain date of Sunday, March 19.

Introduction to Vedic Astrology/Jyotish

Vedic Astrology is an ancient 5000-year Science from where Mathematics and the concept of Zero originated. It is not just a prediction technique but gives us tools for awakening and tuning in to the forces within us as reflected by our Solar System.
Just as our fingerprints are unique, so are our Natal Charts. Calculated differently from a western tropical chart, enjoy a free evening being introduced to the potential and impact of Planets, Constellations and more, and how to use Vedic Astrology in our lives.
