Cordage-Making Materials and Techniques Workshop with Charl

Cordage-Making Materials and Techniques

 Workshop with Charlie Kennard

Saturday, February 4, 2017, 9:30am-3:30pm
Laguna Environmental Center, 900 Sanford Road, Santa Rosa, CA 95401
$85. Pre-registration required: www.lagunafoundation.org

Enjoy a delightful day full of hands-on learning in Heron Hall and around the peaceful Laguna Environmental Center grounds with master weaver, Charlie Kennard. String and rope are made from various parts of many native plants, taking on distinctive appearances and fragrances. We will learn about the different types of fibers, process a variety of plants used by California Indians and others, and use several techniques to make cordage with them. Never be at the end of your rope again!

Charlie Kennard of San Anselmo is a long-time basket weaver and student of California Indian and European techniques. He has taught for the Miwok Archeological Preserve of Marin (MAPOM), Point Reyes Field Institute, East Bay Regional Parks Botanic Garden, and in many schools and at teacher trainings. Tule boats made in his workshops can be seen at the California Academy of Sciences, the Bay Model in Sausalito, the Oakland Museum, and our own Heron Hall. You can also visit a basketry plant garden he has created at the Marin Art and Garden Center in Ross. Charlie is active in native habitat restoration in Marin, managing several projects for Friends of Corte Madera Creek Watershed.

Tools for Building Immunity

Tools for Building Immunity

Do you feel stressed?

While most people would answer “yes” to this question, very few realize the implications of stress on their health.  In 1984, Dr. Kiecolt-Glazer performed a controlled study of the effect of stress hormone cortisol on the functioning of the immune system.  Results of this study indicated a reduced functioning of the immune system.

According to Dr. Mary Meagher, “People exposed to chronic social conflict experience high levels of stress and consequent dysregulation of the immune system, thereby increasing vulnerability to infectious and autoimmune disease.”

Osmosis Day Spa Sanctuary is presenting a workshop on building immunity, giving you tools to both relax your nervous system if your are feeling stressed and self-help techniques for building immunity.

Included in this day-long experience:

  • Chi Gung and meditation practices to manage stress
  • Presentation of essential oils, herbs and foods to strengthen the immune system
  • Self-massage techniques, including lymphatic self-massage and self-acupressure, to increase immune functioning
  • Cedar Enzyme Footbath and 75-minute Swedish-Esalen massage to relax and unwind
  • Healthy Organic farm-to-table lunch

Space is Limited! Reserve Early!

All Inclusive: Morning Session, Organic Lunch & Spa Treatment $239

Raizelah Bayen is the Director of Training and the Massage Therapist Supervisor at Osmosis Day Spa Sanctuary. She has over 25 years in the field of massage, and over 15 years of experience an instructor in a massage certification program. Her specialties include Eastern Massage Modalities and Acupressure, Pregnancy Massage, and Body Mechanics for Bodyworkers.

NEW Heron Hall Art Exhibit “Birds of the Laguna”

This beautiful exhibit features local artist Diana Majumdar’s mixed media and encaustic paintings of birds and landscapes of the Laguna de Santa Rosa. In this show Diana explores the connections between humans and birds in Sonoma County. “Birds are all around us. We live together. My works are inspired by their beauty and our coexistence.” Gathering materials and inspiration from hiking the Laguna trails and from the grounds around Heron Hall, Diana paints the birds from photographs she takes. She combines various media into the finished painting: watercolor, ink, graphite, collage, and chine cholle. Then she seals the surface with wax and paints on top of it with oils. For this show she also incorporates articles from the local paper on local bird watching, texts on common bird populations in Sonoma County, and research on bird population decline.

About her process, Diana explains, “Combining media is not only fun but intriguing. Sometimes I start a painting knowing exactly what the goal is, and sometimes I start with one image or object that catches my eye. While hiking along the Laguna, I’ll see red winged blackbirds sitting on branches -- the image just stays with me and I’ll start working from that impression.  I was initiated into bird watching by my younger son’s natural interest in birds. He and I went on hikes armed with binoculars and camera. Watching and photographing birds then lead me to sketching and then painting them. Appreciation of birds offers moments of beauty and inspiration. I’m more interested in the birds that we find among us rather than exotic species from faraway lands. Estuaries, rivers and wetlands are places to look for birds, but we often take for granted the wealth of birdlife in our backyards. As the urban and suburban areas keep growing and replaces natural habitat, some disappear but some choose to stay and become part of our lives.”

The Heron Hall Art Gallery at the Laguna Environmental Center exhibits multiple shows per year of nature-themed art, sales of which supports the educational and conservation efforts of the Foundation.  Heron Hall is open Monday through Friday 9am-5pm, but because of the various uses of the hall, please call in advance to ensure it will be open for viewing the art, 707-527-9277, ext. 110.

The color palette of Winter reveals itself in the vistas of the Laguna de Santa Rosa and Mt. St. Helena, as well as in the close-up study of shrubs and trees. Kristin Meuser has been painting the land for over 35 years. Several years ago her love of nature led her to the Sierra Nevada Field Campus where she studied nature journaling with Jack Laws, watercolor with Andie Thrams, and writing with Sarah Rabkin. Kristin’s career as a graphic designer gives her journal pages a sense of structured variety and a delightfully cohesive overall effect. She has been teaching watercolor nature journaling for the past 5 years privately and at art and retreat centers in California. Her work is found in private collections, it has been shown regionally, and has been represented by the Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite. For more information, visit her website.
